one of the most popular photo sharing applications just made a huge announcement saying that now there is no longer be the compulsion for all photos and videos being uploaded to the service to be square cropped. This is huge news considering the fact that lots of users had to normally resolve to use various third-party square crop tools to fits photos of different aspect ratios into a square crop just so that they can publish it on Instagram for everyone to see.
In their official statement Instagram stated:
“Square format has been and always will be part of who we are. That said, the visual story you’re trying to tell must always come first, and we want to make it basic and fun for you to share moments just the way you want to. It turns out that nearly one in five photos or videos people post aren’t in the square format, and we know that it hasn’t been easy to share this type of content on Instagram: friends get cut out of group shots, the subject of your video feels cramped and you can’t capture the golden gate Bridge from end to end. Now, when choosing a photo or video, you can tap the format icon to adjust the orientation to portrait or landscape instead of square. once you share the photo, the full-sized version of it will appear to all of your followers in feed in a beautiful, natural way. To keep the clean feel of your profile grid, your post will appear there as a center-cropped square”.
As of now if you do open your Instagram feed you will notice that images and videos will be displayed in their native size and aspect ratio. So no a lot more seeing various backgrounds such a artificial blur effect or silly colours to fill the empty spaces in those third party square crop applications. and for those who can’t see the photos yet, it just indicates you haven’t updated your application yet.
